Volunteer Opportunity

Light Up the Lakefront

October 1st | 4:00PM to 8:30PM

Ohio Street Beach

To mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month each year, Between Friends gathers on the beach to light candles in a striking visual tribute to all those affected by domestic violence each year. We rely on our community of volunteers to help us with set up and clean up, as we assemble and disassemble more than 1,000 luminaries. For more information about the event, please check out last year's program page: https://betweenfriendschicago.org/news-updates/light-up-the-lakefront-2023-program-page/.

Schedule:

4 to 6:00 - Help set up luminaries which are made of paper bags, a scoop of sand, and plumbers candle in the middle.

6:15 to 7:50 - Program

7:50 to 8:30ish - Extinguish candles and begin cleaning up. Disassemble “luminaria”: empty sand onto beach, placing the discarded paper bag and candles in a trash bag. Pack up items and signage from tables. Organize boxes that need to go back to Between Friends. Assist with loading boxes for transportation into van.
